Why This March 8th Will Be Different
This March 8th stands out in a time of global crisis where, in my view, the feminist movement has faced challenges and, at times, devaluation, particularly among international movements claiming to champion women's rights.
In the 21st century, it is disheartening to witness the persistence of war, hatred, and the loss of innocent lives. Among the most egregious atrocities are the sexual violations and other heinous crimes committed against Israeli women on October 7th and the ongoing plight of kidnapped women. These grave issues have, unfortunately, been overshadowed by broader conflicts in the region.
Today, I find my alignment not with any broader feminist movement but with the global movement of Jewish women—mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends—who are raising their voices for those still in captivity and for the young women who fell victim to terrorism on that fateful day.
What will it take for the world to awaken to these urgent realities? While the focus today is on the Jewish community, it’s crucial to recognize that other regions, such as the United States and Canada, have seen significant demographic shifts. The rise in the Muslim population in these countries since the year 2000 underscores the importance of understanding the broader context. It is essential to ask: where are the voices of the mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters of those who perpetrate such atrocities?
Feminism, especially during times of war, faces unique and complex challenges. Women and girls in conflict zones often endure severe violence, making feminist advocacy more crucial than ever. Yet, it is troubling when international feminist movements seem to prioritize some issues over others, leaving critical concerns unaddressed.
To truly make a difference, we need greater awareness and sensitivity towards all forms of violence against women in conflict situations. This includes recognizing and condemning sexual violence as a war crime and advocating for measures to prevent and address these severe human rights violations.
Remember, violence and terrorism are never justifiable. Every individual deserves dignity and respect, regardless of their circumstances. Solidarity and support among women are essential to advancing a fair and equal world for everyone.
